The game was already delayed indefinitely by January 20, 2020. This was like 6 months before the Avellone revelations even came into the spotlight.
Pretty sure it was already in development hell way before this, and they probably used the Avellone thing as an excuse to can him and not have to pay him since they're in development hell and experiencing likely huge financial problems.
I dunno if you recall but Dead Island 2 was supposed to be a thing until it became vaporware, the developer (or at least umbrella company responsible for the split developers) clearly aren't all that reliable or stable and have a history of crashing projects.
