I don't know anything about communism but I'm going to share my vague opinion anyway: Communism is a post-war geopolitical tactic, a smoke bomb. If you have multiple competing nations building wealth, installing communism in your enemy's country means more time and a more linear process for your capitalist nation to build its wealth and power while the communist country has to overcome bureaucratic and pragmatic speed bumps before it eventually, perhaps decades later, finally resumes capitalism - and then bam, the people who were some form of capitalist from the start are way ahead of the curve.
