i've discovered quake 1 still has online and i love it but its kind of dead. is there a game like it that's much more active?

Amid Evil is the most unique and deserving of attention of the bunch but I don't know if that means you should start with it.

Depends on what you like, Amid Evil is more fantasy-eque. Ion Fury is cyperpunky and then Dusk and Blood are like Evil Dead 2 in game form

I'd give anything for a boomer shooter with a sci-fi JRPG aesthetic (Think Xenoblade)

You really cant go wrong, all good games but Dusk is probably the weakest out of those imo. I would honestly go with Amid evil, it's the most unique out of those, a wild ride.

As far as I know Quake Champions is kinda active but that's more of Quake III than the original. Your best bet is probably to try to set up games with friends or set up a community if you wanna play quake 1 multiplayer

Difficulty scaling: Higher difficulties don’t just increase their damage and numbers but their health and accuracy too.
People were fine with this because there are several difficulty settings and even more with the ports, and once you get used to it the difficulty “stops you” no more or less as Shadow Warrior does, except you’ll just die to bullets as opposed to a 100+ damage explosion.

Gameplay is Dusk winning out by a bit, but if it’s visuals and art direction and quality were on par with Amid Evil’s it’d be the clear winner.

I thought the combat in Dusk was way better. the movement is so smooth and each enemy feels unique and requires you to play against it differently. the enemies in Amid Evil can all be blasted at with whatever gun you have ammo for, it doesn't really matter

AE does have some truly stunning environments, but so does Dusk

Doom will never get old and there will always be great new wads.

I wish I could enjoy Blood but it gives me insane motion sickness. I don't even experience light symptoms with any other game but for some reason Blood makes me feel like throwing up in mere seconds.

honestly the second level with the mansion is the most comfy shit to this day

I agree I prefer the combat and weapons of Dusk, personal I like AE's visuals more, but Dusk does look pretty good too.
