Before it was more of a celebration of Nintendo's history, wasn't like they were basically selling character slots to 3rd party companies so they could hype their products like they do now.
The game is such a bloated fucking mess now. I legit wish they would scrap half or even more of the characters and stages to make a more tight, deeper game. But its falling in to the trap of what a lot of fighting games do by endlessly adding content until its an unbalancable game.

Smash started as a low budget, wacky, accessible platform fighter called Dragon King, after Sakurai felt bad for kicking novice ass in King of Fighters. The only reason Nintendo characters were added was because Sakurai was worried the OCs he made wouldn't sell. The series never stopped being the wacky fighter where anything could happen. It just expanded from "wacky game with Nintendo characters" to "wacky game with anything".
