The whole point of religion was always to try and explain natural phenomena. Of course it happened before a time where you were expected to back it up with proof so you just had people making wild claims (a woman in rome has given birth to a goat!) and people would just believe it.
Nowadays it's hard because we've been all over the world and there's never been any evidence of miracles or ghosts or whatever on camera.
Also the fact that religions could just persecute or kill anyone who denied them probably helped too.
