It takes skill to write a good character. It takes dumb luck for someone who can write a good character to also make said character anything that isn't white. Johnson was a diamond in the rough.

Black characters made in the west these days are in this really weird spot where they have to be as bland and inoffensive as possible which results in them feeling super homogenized
In retrospect it's actually fucked up how much the "diversity" push actually just involves taking the same generic template and trying to pass it off as "progressive"
