I never finished playing the third game because the second I set foot on the citadel, as the reapers were supposedly wrecking shit across the universe I realized that the game was utterly garbage. It was further confirmed as you later have to deal with a series of missions where they throw emotional bait after bait after bait. ME was never about just the gameplay, it was about the story, even the filler episode that was ME2 full of the retarded corny shit like the Krogan puberty and the fujobait frog assassin still had it's moments. No I wouldn't soil my memory of the glorious first game any further than the second game already did.

there's absolutely no chance in hell ME recovers from that last 10 min barrage of shit (really most of the duration of the 3rd entry), unless the devs grow a pair and retcon everything that went wrong.

I wish I could get excited for these things, but news of any kind fills me with nothing but concern. Will they fuck up the story? Will they go in an awful direction? Will they retcon any of those decisions I thought hard on ? (THEY BETTER NOT). What lore will they add? Will the lore throw a wrench in my understanding of the world? Will the lore only create more questions for me to theorize over? Will the new game ruin my other theories? Will the new game have sequel bait? Will the new game take away my agency? (especially egregious in games where my canon is a self-insert). How will the game handle the ending? (Shepard can be disintegrated, after all). Will I play as Liara and they act like Shepard is MIA? (That'd be unsatisfying). If Shepard comes back no matter what, how will they justify it? Will the retcon the control/synthetic so Shep lives no matter what ending you pick? Will they pull a Deus Ex, where all the endings are canon? My brain didn't want these questions, take them back!

Of course, also not really. If you saved the Rachni queen for example? Well either you kill her or Grunt. If you didn't kill her, the game just spawns a new queen for you and it changes nothing. Remember that Krogan you might have helped romance an Asari in Illium? Well too bad he'd dead. Remember that Quarian in the Tali recruitment mission you can save by taking out the big geth walker on your own? Well it makes no difference, he dies either way. This is all ME3 was, it bottlenecks all the possible choices you made in the previous games into one fucking result and then further discards the choices you made during the game by making the only relevant decision in the end between merging with reapers, killing reapers and getting back to the stone age or trying to control the reapers. It's one big fuck you to choices in general.

People are going to want characters back. It would be really tone deaf to set the game in a future where all the characters are dead except Liara. Mass Effect isn't about exploring space or shooting stuff, it's about characters and decisions. And that's exactly what people want back.
