It did exist but SMRPG barely has any dialogue between party members unless they're doing something big like explaining shit to beta Toadsworth or reuniting Mallow with his parents...
However Geno did have a sort of arc. At first he was just focused on getting the Star Pieces to fix the Road, but before getting to Smithy pic related happens.
He uses his mute sprite and cuts himself short.
This shit clearly shows he grew attached to the party but knows he has to leave after everything's done.
