1 had the game feel of "dad simulator" down perfectly. Ellie very much acted like a kid her age would, and Joel often handled it as a father would: sometimes well, sometimes horribly. The combat was passable and the plot, while tropey and very much "go from point A to point B" was coherent and not worthy of outrage, just disappointment at best.
2 on the other hands offed Joel, who for most is the most popular character because of the above dad simulator vibe. I think that alone accounts for most of 2's outrage. 1 didn't do anything to piss off people.
Also 1 gave us assloads of good Ellie and Sarah hentai so major points for that.
