NieR Automata is easily the most mediocre game that Zig Forums pretends is good. Even games like Breath of the Wild and Persona 5 do what they set out to do really well even if they have flaws, but NieR Automata does nothing extremely well.

NieR Automata is genuinely less fun to play than BotW and Persona 5, two games Zig Forums shits on because they were bigger mainstream successes. Midwit criticism is to take something that does 10 things right and 2 things wrong, and focus exclusively on the 2 things wrong shitposting those few points to death and smugly pretend your "objective" criticism holds weight when it clearly doesn't capture the whole picture. I can at least say BotW and P5 do certain things extremely well which other games don't match up to, which make them memorable even if other parts of it could be better. NieR Automata has no such claim, it's thoroughly average at best, and mediocre at worst.
Even for an action game, it's embarrassing that its combat is worse than fucking BotW and P5. In both games you can "pause to heal" which sucks, but at least in BotW you have to prepare the dishes you want to use so it takes some effort if you want to trivialize fights. In NieR:A you can just buy 99 of each healing item and never die. Also, in BotW, at least you don't have infinite i-frames and can get rewarded for playing well like triggering a Flurry Rush counter or perfect shield parrying to reflect lasers. You can also dick around a LOT with Stasis, Cryonis, Magnesis and countless environmental variables to play creatively. NieR:A gives no such room and is completely unga bunga in comparison. In other games if you dodge incorrectly in a way that you'd get hit where your roll ends, you're punished, but in NieR you never get punished because continuously spamming R2 gives you chained i-frames so you never actually get hit if you mistime a dodge. Even the hacking minigame in Automata was more fun than its combat.
as for P5, even the first boss fight against Kamoshida made me use my brain more than the entirety of NieR:A. It's telling when your action game is less engaging than a fucking turn based RPG.
I'd forgive it if it excelled at *something*, but it doesn't.

Understandable. It had some interesting mechanics like the X-COM inspired inventory system and you can tell the devs had a lot of ambition with the game but it's pretty clear they didn't have the skill or the budget to pull off what they really wanted so what's left is a pretty flawed game that's not for everyone.

Games like Dragon's Dogma I can believe because it's actually popular on Zig Forums, but I don't believe games like TLoU, RDR2 or even Persona 5 are games that Zig Forums specifically convicined a large amount of people to play, they get shat on on Zig Forums plenty, and are more popular elsewhere.

Was good for the first, 50 hrs. Then the resin system kicked in (I reached AR 35 before the first patch) and the game slowed to a fucking crawl. You can't make any progress and even if you spend money you're capped to like 10 progressive activities per day, and the chests are scattered so goddamn far apart it got boring. Didn't help that the shills constantly responded that you should enjoy chest grinding and who needs progress when you can run around the same areas over and over again
