The playstation brand carries more weight in 2020 than microsoft. The only time this wasn't the case was between 2006 to 2010, when the 360 was the undisputed king (wii wasn't really direct competition at the time)
This has nothing to do with the quality of next gen hardware, it will take about 2-3 years of fierce competition for xbox to catch up with the brand recognition

At the beginning of last gen, there was literally no reason to buy an xbox over a playstation unless you really, really, liked Halo, a franchise whose last highlight was 6 years in the past. Now PS has more cultural presence simply because that's where most of the playesr are. It will take MS at least another generation or two to recover.

Genuine question: what did Xbox do last gen to make Xbox users want to buy the new console or to make PlayStation or Nintendo users jump ship?
I know this is always the argument against Microsoft, but the lack of exclusives absolutely ruins the Xbox line for me. I feel like I’m missing absolutely nothing by having a PS4 and a Switch. And when there’s a next gen game that I want to play, I’ll buy a PS5 probably. I’d much sooner build a gaming PC than I would purchase an Xbox.
Also, this is a petty gripe that doesn’t affect me at all, but imagine a parent going to buy a new console for their kids on Christmas. It’s very easy to tell what the newest and best PlayStation is, but they’re going to see the Series X, Series S, One X, and One S in stores and online this year, and there are plenty of parents and grandparents too retarded to tell which console is the latest.
All the silly marketing you mentioned aside the Xbox brand is Microsoft's highly niche and dwindling gaming division that they've promised not to give up on because they've already put in the initial investment and have a devoted fanbase (no matter how small). If they keep their foot in the door they can immediately take advantage of the situation when one of the more important guys fucks up

Game Pass is the only one I can think of and even then there is a version of it on PC.
Maybe the Perfect Dark will change my mind on Xbox but then again I imagine that will come out on PC also.
