DE1 and Human Revolution are the only ones I really recommend

DE1 IS clunky, if you weren't playing PC games back in the late 90's/early 00's, you're gonna have a rough time adjusting, but it's worth it if you stick with it.

First one is clunky, but extremely mechanically satisfying once you get into the swing of things. IW is a decent game, but suffers from small levels, and general "closet like" design. HR and MD play the best, but piss all over the themes and story, and rip off Ghost in the shell instead, your enjoyment depends on your tolerance of Americans attempting to replicate Japanese world building.

There's nothing "rough" about it. The game aged fine. The only thing that might throw somebody off is the default config which can be easily adjusted.

I'd suck DX2000's sweaty ballsack if it had one, but the movement and shooting mechanics is not exactly what one would call smooth. It also has some extremely weird choices, like giving you a choice of weapons at the start, with one of the weapons only being obtainable again like 75% trough the game, and the other two being obtainable within 2 minutes of leaving the starting area. Or the redundant weapon skills, which can be easily replaced by just modding the shit out of your weapons. The swimming skill practically being a beginners point waster. Weird unpredictable AI, stealth that works about 60% of the time...
Deus Ex has a really high skill ceiling, and learning how to abuse every single mechanic leads to endless fun, but for a first time player, it amounts to a giant pile of fuck.

Cause the game was too ambitious for a 90's budget. The path was planned and everything, there are even cut lines of dialog from it, that are still present in the game files.

there's leftovers in the game indicating they originally intended for it to be possible like JC's "UNATCO isn't perfect" line, Jock's chopper being placed on the battery park map when you reach the (unwinnable) fight with Gunther, as well as textures/models for stuff like a white house level

You start with Deus Ex. The graphics were clunlky even at launch and the shooting isn't the best.
But it's really fucking good.
If you want a more modern game play Human Revolution but i would not play it as my first game. Invisible War is the black sheep of the series.

I did the same but because i got a decent Pc and decided to try some classic games i neglected after my work life fucking died.

Skip the first game, play Human Revolution then Mankind Divided.
DX1 is outdated
