He knew that staying involved with Meryl would not only make her miserable but also put her life in danger, so he broke up with her to keep her safe.

I think couples with share goals seem to be more functional. Didn't you just stated that they broke up because Snake was dying? Anyway, I have never seen Snake willingly want to save the world. He always does it because there's no other choice or he's their last hope.

Nah I joined in separately. Wasn't Otocon and his operation kind of volunteer? Like an anti metal gear operation. I didn't get the impression he had to do it. But then later in the other titles he definitely was in the middle of it all and had to do what he had to do. Maybe it's one of those "Clones" thing that make Snake "not a real Human", which is something Kojima has been babbling about, them being unable to form a relationship with the other sex.
After all, they're sterile and it's unknown whether Liquid or Solidus ever had any actual relationship with women.
