Why do most of the areas feel more like hallways to the bosses than actual complete areas?

They don't.
You'd have to be insane to call Cathedral of the Deep a "hallway", shit is huge. Getting through Ringed City is harder than the actual bosses outside of Midir.

What did he mean by this?

This

Because it's a boss rush game. DS2 has better areas to explore.

I can tell you're all new so let me throw you a bone: youre supposed to hate Dark Souls 3 on this website. the only from games youre allowed to like are Dark Souls and the original Demon Souls.
you do NOT want to see what happens if you step out of line.

Every major area felt like there was a LARGE arena, and tied to it was a smaller and more narrow side area.
Down in the catacombs:
> Smouldering Lake was the giant arena
> The catacombs themselves were the narrow hallways
Crucifixion forest/Road of sacrifices:
> The swamp with the crabs was the giant arena
> the fortress that houses the Crystal Sage is the narrow hallways
The Cathedral of the Deep:
> The room with the giants is the big arena
> the side passages to all the loot and the Deacons are the narrow hallways

I feel like this is true for like 80% of the game's levels, there's a giant arena and lots of narrow hallways attached to that giant arena.
>

high wall (just barely), undead settlement, cathedral, lothric castle, grand archives and the optional archdragon peak are the only areas that don't feel like hallways. there are also the swamps, but fuck the swamps. a lot of the other areas are very disappoing, irithyll and anor londo especially.

Because you are just baiting to start another pointless DS threads where everyone shits on every single title and posts his cherrypicked screenshots and continues to sperg for 300 posts

>you do NOT want to see what happens if you step out of line.
Autism?

What a shit game.

Areas that are straightforward, with nearly no branching paths

>First, pre-firelink area
>Roughly half of Irathyll
>Arguably the area between Dancer and Dragonslayer Armor has only 1 optimal path
>Tiny King's Garden area
>Dragon Peak areas

That's all I can think of. The more "classic DS" areas handily outnumber them.

You can reply to my post ONLY if you like every single soulsbornekiro game no exceptions.

i bet you like eating feces and playing Dark Souls 2, don't you

Irithyll is narrow but it's not just a straight line to the boss, you have to go through the church and circle around to unlock the gate.

user you realize what you listed makes up like 80% of the fucking game right?

6 areas? they absolutely do not. I listed most of the memorable areas though. Wonder why.

Undead Settlement has branching paths right before the Estus Shard at the tree, where you can go to Nana's cage and short-cut to elevator, or go to the Curserotted Greatwood, then circle to the elevator.

Cathedral outdoors does have a fairly straight path, not counting the ladder/swamp that most people probably don't go down into, but the interior has the rafters to use as a skip, and the side elevators create shortcuts.

>lists over half the game
So its not all hallways to the boss then retard

Based also reporting in I seriously love them all and have 100's of hours in each even DS2

CoA, Road of Sacrifices, Catacombs, Smouldering Lake, Irithyll, Anor Londo, Profaned Capital, CKG, Untended Graves are all hallways. Even some of the areas that are technically huge are pointlessly huge slogs like farron keep which causes them to be unmemorable

Because you have major nostalgia goggles on
If you think DS1 and 2 zones are any less of “hallways” you need to replay them.

even the areas that are hallways in 1 have their own identity at least, like crystal caves

>have their own identity
Literally meaningless, all I hear is you’re a nostalgia-ridden boomer

Death to racist jannies

>variety and soul in a video game is meaningless
I expected this from a ds3 zoomer

Because they are

What if I don't like one because I haven't played it yet?

No, you fucking retard, I said your “argument” that shitty DS1 Zones have “identity” is meaningless
DS3 zones have “identity” too. Eat shit stupid boomer

If you can’t actually explain how DS1 zones have more “identity” you admit you’re just a nostalgia goggles wearing boomer and should kys

ds2 was fucking awful

>DS3 zones have “identity”
ah yes, like anor londo but blue and filled with sludge.
crystal caves is unlike anything else in the game. there's no such area in ds3

This is standard game design for non-open world games, you're railroaded to the end, with maybe some branching paths and optional areas along the way.

fpbp, don't forget Grand Archives too
