I am 100% convinced this is actually what happened. If you go back and watch the 2018 demo, after V wakes up next to the dude and puts on the radio, you can clearly hear the guy on the radio say something about the next song being from Johnny Silverhand and then he says "been a year since he took his last ride". Which means that he had only been gone for a year, the entire plotline used in the game couldn't have existed then.
