As a traditional Catholic myself, I have to weigh in and say that I was an atheist once. Of the smug variety, but I wasn't an asshole about it. As I was confronted with apologetics, things started slowly to make sense for me and I opened myself to the experience of God.
I urge people to stay open minded and ask God for strength in situations where doubt seems overwhelming, the truth stays persistent and letting it fight on its own it will never let you down.

I grew up Christian, baptized and saved. I still live and behave like Jesus intends me to, but don't go to church. I realized that the reason everyone went to church was purely out of a fear of hell and many were adhering to the law but not the spirit of God's word, or worse, that they saw services as their way of rolling doubles to get out of jail spiritually while paying lip service and 10% of their income.
Jesus said 'love one another as you love yourself', and I adhere to that without having someone interpret that for me. Church is cope for fear, and by being a good person I have nothing to fear.
