Accurate. Lifting in a gym on your own time/pace is far and fucking away from a competition. The importance of a competition is that it's on a day, place, and format NOT of your choosing. That's the best way to evaluate strength: by taking the personal choice of the contestant out of the equation. The only thing the contestant can do is train and otherwise anticipate the day in question. Additionally there's not necessarily any supervision/proper witnesses to the records set in gyms. Thor can pull whatever he wants and more power to him, but Brian Shaw is/was dead on the money about it being bullshit if anyone considers it an official world record.
