How did Zig Forums become a predominately politically liberal site to a predominately conservative site?

When did the flip occur, and what were some milestone events along the way?

"Liberal" has a very different meaning today.

Would you mind elaborating on the change in definition over time?

young people always go against authority. Zig Forums became big first while Bush was president, and user base was 13-18 mostly.

during obama it was easier to switch for young people, and a lot of the user base grew older which meant they started naturally becoming more conservative.

Probably Zig Forums realizing Ron Paul wasn't getting elected, BLM shit, GG for the whole site.

Around 2014-2016. I remember arguing with people about how abortion is actually a good thing and how people should support free abortions to prevent the uncontrolled generation of children in underprivileged communities. I also remember discussing the importance of sexual freedom and acceptance with responsibility encouraging transgenderism, homosexuality, and other non-traditional sexual lifestyles. Not because I partake in them myself, but because openness and acceptance creates safer societies. I also remember the unified anti-religious community here that recognized how harmful it is for society.

Essentially a combination of nu-civil rights, nu-feminism, and the 2016 election ruined the community.

I don't think this is true. I typically find that most older users are more liberal than the younger users here.

Zig Forums is counter culture.
In the early 2010s that meant raging against boomers, but society has degraded so much that its become counter culture to simply be straight and white now

Zig Forums's mindset is "fuck off and leave me be". Both liberals and conservatives get into peoples' business too much, but younger generations typically perceive the conservatives getting into their lives while older generations perceive the liberals getting into their lives. This is kinda changing and even zoomers are seeing more of the effects of liberals getting into peoples' lives while their power grows and conservative power wanes.

Like yeah, I'm fucking sick of the shit the liberals are pushing, but I sure as hell don't want conservatives to bring back traditional ideals of going to church and actual gender roles where women have to be barefoot pregnant housewives and men have to be breadwinners that wear suits every day.

that's nice. but it is what it is. take whatever you think the "social norm" in politics is right now, and take the exact opposite view. that's what will always be popular on Zig Forums among the young users.

People who grow old on Zig Forums are losers, of course they're liberal.

I don't understand this response, are you agreeing with me? I really can't tell with people here these days.

The momment the jews decided the white race is practically extinct and that they need to start switching ideologies for the day of the tope, which is when all the niggers on earth will get genocided by the brown mutt hordes, this site and all social medias are controlled by them after all

Agreeing that being conservative is just the cool edgy thing to be right now. Its slowly going to switch again as conservatives gain more power over media.

I have a theory that increased moderation power decreased the amount and emphasis of gore and other images that induce disgust on Zig Forums.

As we know, there is a decent amount of scientific evidence that suggests that conservatives are more prone to feeling emotions of intense disgust. When less gore and other items are posted on Zig Forums, or are more easily deleted as a result of superior modding tools and authority of janitor teams, conservative minded posters are less likely to be dejected from browsing Zig Forums. In the early days of Zig Forums, it used to be much easier to avoid bans, post gore, and have the gore remain on on page 1 much longer than it is today.

I think the counter culture argument that Zig Forums will always be opposite of what's popular is an incomplete view. While it likely had something to do with it, it doesn't explain it all. Also, obviously, one of the biggest factors was GG and the 2016 election hyperpoliticizing Zig Forums. The opinions of the userbase didn't change; the userbase with preexisting beliefs changed, and we have the traffic data to prove that.

But if you had more gore, you'd have less conservative posters. Hell, the coomer meme was born out of extreme disgust response from libidinous pictures. Gore was the ultimate filter for Zig Forums, and it is an underutilized tool in 2020 due to superior moderation tools and reporting system.

I feel you. Honestly it just seems like everyone here responds with aggression even when they don't need to.

Go fuck yourself.

Zig Forums has largely been counter-cultural and contrarian. It was always largely anti-authority.This is why there were small little operations like Chanology and the like. Up until ~2012, it was largely libertarian leaning.

When shit like gamergate and the like happened, it revealed the increasingly authoritarian measures being taken by people in supposed positions in power. In this case, it was largely perpetuated by the media and the tech companies. This red-pilled many, considering the authoritarian response to everything (shadowbans, overt bans on other forums, only 1 side of the story being misrepresented on media). The freedom of open discourse was being challenged by a controlled narrative. This was coupled with the increasingly authoritative, Orwellian style SJW dialogue being thrown around in universities prior to this. Many users were exposed to this in college/work as they got older (prior to GG). As a response, the live and let live mentality gradually shifted. You also had the biased media coverage of shit like Trayvon, BLM shit, Freddie Gray. The financial crisis in 2008/bailouts and Occupy Wallstreet was kind of the backlash against the corporate oligarchy and technocracy.

The socially liberal/libertarian types largely were disgusted by the neoliberal corporate overlord messaging being fed and forced upon them from all sides. Those on here don't like being told how to live or what to think. A live and let live mentality works if others believe similarly to you. However, once people forcing to live in specific ways or think specific things, it becomes a different story. The 2010s were full of these events.

Nazis went online in 2013. Number of hate group members dropped drastically since and groups like alt rights aren't counted yet.

is any of this true? wasn't /new/ nuked because it was becoming too right wing for moot's taste?

Zig Forums is chaos, when chaos cools it often becomes somewhat orderly. However, the first principal cannot be ignored for long, as such, eventually it breaks apart again, and cools, and breaks, and cools. The cycle is not unlike that of The Phoenix. An unsightly one, but an apt comparison none the less.
The 4Chenix if you will.

Yeah, a long time ago it was a lot more balanced, but then overtime it became overwhelmingly right wing and pushed everyone else out. I agree with mootykins that Zig Forums was probably the biggest mistake because it started off as containment but eventually they spread and now you can't go on any board without being told the jews are behind everything.

I couldn't agree more. "Liberals" today (in reality they're pretty far removed from traditional liberals) largely refuse to "let live".

To be fair, things like homosexuality and transgenderism shouldn't be nearly as controversial as they are - but the problem is that many on the left want to try to police thoughts in addition to actions.

If you think gay marriage is wrong, that should be fine - as long as you aren't trying to prevent someone else from living life the way they want to, you're entitled to your opinion just the same as anyone else.

this but mostly pic related

many on this site are more interested in their well-being and their interests represented in politics rather than support policies that improve the situation of the greater-good

This site and both r9k and pol are heavily astroturfed by foreign powers trying to radicalize bitter, angry, maladjusted young men.

there's an image for this one too. The original Zig Forums crowd got slowly pushed out (probably several times) by normalfags and coombrains who realized people would literally spoonfeed them porn if they had enough brain power to type "sauce [submit]" and solve a captcha. Zig Forums and s4s as a last effort to revive that "old Zig Forums" mentality ironically made sure that it sucked the very last bit of it outside of Zig Forums itself. And whether or not you like Zig Forums, it's always been the heart of the site. Every board has crossposters with Zig Forums.

Not related to politics per se, but I feel that the aggression on Zig Forums definitely drove a lot of more moderate people away over time and reduced a lot of discussion to shit flinging. Once upon a time there were a fair amount of femanons on Zig Forums back before "tits of gtfo" became a standard response to every single femanon regardless of if she was attention whoring or not, but then over time the aggression drove people away as it's tiring to constantly get the same 4 responses repeated ad infinitum. I gave up trying to have any meaningful conversation on Zig Forums years ago because nobody listens, everyone argues in bad faith and everyone's a dick about it.

People who are creative tend to be open (Big 5 personality trait), and people who are open tend to be socially liberal. People who are creative also are at higher risk for cluster B disorders. People with cluster B disorders, such as BPD, tend to overreact and believe their emotions are real and distort facts, leading to false rape culture and a 'all good or all bad' view of the world.

Social media and a broken mainstream media system publish and run with these offensive and outlandish reactions which contributes to the pain, which unfortunately makes the voices of a minority of crazy women (sorry, women are more BPD prone) appear more prominent than they really are. SJW and the Orwellian nature of it all are legitimate concerns with social liberalism, and are products of a broken system. This is how Trump won, after all. People were tired of a broken media system.

Which is a shame, obviously. The anonymous nature of Zig Forums is a nature safe opportunity to discuss political opinions without fear of censorship and shaming.

The culture change on Zig Forums as a result has been fascinating. Atheism used to be mainstream on Zig Forums and now it's borderline impossible to discuss without *tips fedora* and other ad hominem attacks.

>many on this site are more interested in their well-being and their interests represented in politics
I don't think many millionaires frequent Zig Forums.

This website is a commie shithole
