It is very real. Those happy couples aren't faking it. Whether is lasts a few weeks or a lifetime, love is a very normal part of peoples lives.
And women are more promiscuous these days, what with sexual liberation and all that. The normal thing is to date around in your teens and twenties, settle down, get into a marriage that may or may not last, grow old and die more or less satisfied. This system works for the vast majority of people, but of course, there will always be one or two outliers who severely struggle with life. Can't cry over every poor soul who doesn't make it

my one irl friend's parents had a very strong marriage - his mom stayed with his dad through an addiction, poverty, failing looks, failing health, having her body changed by 7 kids... they were madly in love until he died. hanging out at my friend's house is still the best because there's such a strong sense of family there even with his dad dead and gone. they give me some hope.
