To say that desiring a tomboy girlfriend comes of repressed homosexuality isn't exactly accurate, though it has some merit - men who want a tomboy girlfriend generally are uncomfortable around "normal" women and desire the comfort that masculinity, something they know well, brings them. They attach this idea of a masculine-oriented yet secretly feminine personality onto a more rugged or 'plain' looking woman to further enhance their fantasy. To say this is repressed homosexuality is only partially true due to the desire for a masculine mindset, though most men who desire a tomboy girlfriend tend to emphasize the hidden femininity to compensate for that. It's not unhealthy but unfortunately most women who have these traits tend to have them hammered out before their mid-teens as gender roles are still quite concrete today, regardless of what some more radical "gender theorists" will say.
