Similar societal collapse and decline was seen in Rome and Hellenistic Greece/etc. Lessening fertility rates, increasing hedonism, etc. all were coupled with that decline. We can never truly know the scope of the issue in the past, nor can we actually gauge where we are in the present. We can only compare and speculate. Endless rumination doesn't achieve anything though.

it's true that modern conveniences afford us a better quality of life than the world has ever seen before, but the same economic systems that allowed for these technological advancements have also allowed for extreme wealth inequality and exploitation of the working class. it's not at all different from what was happening ~100 years ago, with guys like carnegie/rockefeller/etc getting filthy rich at the expense of their workers, but also managing to improve living standards at large through their business. what we need is labor reform and economic reform, same way we needed it back then. IDK why in the year 2020 I'm working 60 hour weeks of hard manual labor in an 80 degree+ literal sweatshop just because it's the only job I can get in this fucking quarantine.

yea, i think we're undoubtedly living in better times than we've ever seen before, just going off of what information technology/computing has done for us alone. if you look at certain aspects of life, though - i'll use the economy as an example again - you can see why someone would say that they'd rather be living in a time even as recently as ~20 years ago - it's really all just a matter of how you look at it and what's more important personally to you.
