ukuleles are a little temperamental on voicing, but the position of your finger won't make it sound significantly better.
no matter how close you're pinching the string down, as long as it's enough to clearly sound against the fret and isn't overlapping, it SHOULD sound the note you're fingering. the issue is that somewhere along the neck, it's likely coming into contact with another part of the fretboard (the pink circle).
that's not exactly an expensive one. first thought would be a new bridge piece, but then the action would be a bit higher on the other strings.

might as well. as long as it's not guitar center or something, the staff will probably have a decent enough grasp on setting it up, and you can actually demo the one you plan to buy. even if you're not great at playing, getting to feel it out and see how you like it is a lot better than online orders.
