I'm compiling a chart of the most quintessential California albums. It can be either because the artists are explicitly from the state, or simply because they evoke the state's spirit in their music. The albums I have already added should give some reference as to what I'm looking for.
California-core

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Beach Boys - any album between Surfer Girl and Summer Days (and Summer Nights)
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Mr. Bungle - California
Dick Dale - Greatest Hits
Kanye West - MBDTF
Love - Forever Changes
These are all no brainers, as well as anything by the Grateful Dead (like them or not, I’m afraid they are Cali to the core)
Sublime
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See
The Doors - s/t
The Eagles fucking suck but probably qualify
California Indie pop
Keep them coming. I've also added one other album that I think is particularly fitting.
Good pick. Joni is an example of just evoking the state's spirit since she was born and raised in Alberta.
I did think of The Chronic and Straight Outta Compton but wanted to see what the thread thought. Anyway, I'm not going to add all of those because I want to give other anons a fair chance of adding albums.
Same goes for this. Very solid picks, but I'll see how the rest of the thread pans out before I decide to add the rest.

At the home stretch, now. I've added two more albums that I felt were too good to exclude.
I'm not going to lie when I say that I think this is garbage, but it also still fits my criteria, so I'll include it.
I can't believe I didn't even think of Primus. Good call.
Faith No More?
Green Day - Dookie
Metallica - Kill em All
