I think he was great, people take great guitarist to mean great lead guitarist but rhythm is far more important to serving the songs, kurt was a totally solid rhythm player with a great sense of dynamics, an ear for little bursts of noise for extra texture, gets the balance just right between melody and aggression, and always in service of the song. Its the beauty of the power trio, there's nowhere to hide and youve got to work to hold the whole band together, he got lazy and stopped giving a shit in when Pat Smear was in the band, though his playing was actually still pretty strong in the end.

you're missing the point. It's about energy. Grunge is basically just punk revival. Punk was about getting away from the technicality of prog. Cobain's favorite record is Raw Power which is very similar to his aspirations in that it's a great record without having very technical play.
