the lyrics are not meant to be read as poetry, they're meant to work together with the music melodically and rhythmically. who cares if something doesnt make sense if it envokes the emotions its trying to envoke.

dont be mad at an artist for growing and expanding their horizons, and with that maybe pulling back on things that have become a cliche for what he or she creates. this exact same thing happened when teens of denial dropped, with people complaining about the lyrics not being extremely specific and personal, please just let the man grow out of his teenage art.

Nothing was accentuated. In terms of production value, he has albums that rival this, that he made by himself, with fuller sound. In terms of songwriting and structure, he has infinitely more complex songs than the ones in this. In terms of singing, he has more aggressive vocal performances in previous records. In terms of lyrics, this is the worst. These are all undeniable, verifiable facts.

Will has somewhat changed at every album and I liked every single one of them before this. Don't assume things and use your assumptions as arguments. ToD also had Costa Concordia, which obliterates anything on MADLO.

The production on some of the older albums are definitely better. HTLT had much better sounding synths as an example. Just because it's not low-fi doesn't mean it's better. The synths straight up ruin multiple songs. They sound like the most basic preset synth you could find turned up to 11. It's fucking ass.

Didn't even say this, but as for the rest, nope. Was it supposed to evoke emotion or to have fun? To rival the big pop acts (according to Will himself) or to just have silly fun? It can't be both. There was a genuine attempt here and it failed.

And yes, good music production isn't synonymous with "throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks". The fact that they repeat samples backwards (because that's deep) 200 times in the same song doesn't make this well produced. HTLT was infinitely more coherent and pleasant to listen to than this.

i'm just saying that that attitude together with the whole costume thing is a way for will to distance himself from the music, making everything less personal in maybe the most obvious way possible. i would say that that is also the case for most big pop albums, it is most of the time not actually about the artist but a character that artist is playing.

The most fun I had on the record was Can't Cool Me Down and turning it off directly after.
