phew, I really hate where Argentinian mainstream and alternative culture as well have been going for the past years. The most referenced local artists are all soulless prog farts doing corny music with empty symbolist poetry from decadent beatniks faking "connection" to the world. The most revered act (Catriel) is just a continuum of the same from Spinetta, going through Illya Kuryaki to them.
I'd really love to discover new latin songs or artists that speak of something REAL for god's sake

Peru had a blast from the 70s to the 80s. There's nothing in the entire world as what they did to rock/dance music.
Uruguayan music for the most part has the same root as Argentinian music, but its results are very different. Darker, moodier, wackier. Market is so small no one gives a crap about pop friendliness. Argentinians on the other hand are quite fond of self-exhibition and pleasingness.
I have yet to hear Chilean music that is worth something. Not that I tried. Mexico... I just don't know. The well-known acts are somewhat lackish. It's such a big country I know one day I might get into a super cool scene/sound or something.
