What’s the deal with nu metal?

I like some metal bands like Korn and Slipknot, but I often see that they are not “metal” but are actually some different genre named “nu metal” which is apparently really different? A lot of nu metal I listen to sounds like stuff I heard as a kid like on the radio or at the mall, but I never really hear it anymore
What exactly is nu metal? Why isn’t it considered metal?
The stuff I listen to sounds pretty cool, usually a good mix of funky basslines with loud electric guitar and a lot of electronic techniques thrown in and rapping and stuff, it’s a very cathartic sound and pretty fun, so why is nu metal so looked down upon as stupid or inferior? And why isn’t nu metal popular anymore, when it seems there’s a lot more interesting stuff you could do with the style? Is nu metal truly dead as in not being made outside of a bunch of generic sounding legacy bands (this seeems to be the case) or is there such a thing as like “underground” nu metal bands active now?
Full disclosure is I’m a zoomer so I didn’t live through the 90s and I spent most of the early 2000s crying and shitting in diapers, so this really is something I didn’t live through. I’d just like older anons to give me a history lesson on this stuff
I like some nu metal, but I don’t understand this whole culture and stigma surrounding it

the divorce really fucked him up bro

Listen to deftones

I do

The problem with that sound is that many bands were clearly metal orientated and swayed it that way.
To me though, it's always what grunge turned into mixed with hip hop. I think the metal label ruined it.

Did he get alimony'd?

I kinda think they were too manufactured to me in the 90's 00's era.
Korn was raw and seemed to just come from nowhere because the members were half tapped in the head.

it's not considered metal because metalheads seethe when a genre of music that's heavy exists outside of it's scene. because then it's tarnishing their image by using the label or some shit. it was developed from grunge, funk, alt-metal, and whatever other shit that lead to it's conception. so metalheads use this as an excuse to push it away from the genre.
and it's an outdated style, one that if used now, will make you sound like a cringy buttrock band trying to be hip. it reached it's conclusion of creating NWOAHM and that's enough of the genre the world needs.
the newest trend of the genre is mixing with metalcore, something that's hit or miss.

On the right track. It's not really metal, it's like a harder offshoot of grunge, and it died for the same reason. Too many bands producing the same sound for too long.

It isn't metal because it isn't rooted in metal and is closer to grunge, hard rock, and hip hop than metal. Overamped guitars and lots of percussion are only a small part of what makes a metal band.

eh, that's just your autistic requirements. I don't care for whatever is "real metal" I'll just listen to a band and if they have a heavy sound in their guitar, then they're metal in my book. regardless of genre.

Alright, you're entitled to be a retard, no one is going to stop you. But there are actually specific elements that separate genres regardless of whether your lazy ass takes notice of them. Bands like Korn are not metal bands.

I am aware of how separate genres. I an tell Nu apart from other genres, nonetheless I am not going to ignore it's metallic influence just because it wasn't "rooted in them".

Being influenced by another genre does not make it a part of that genre.

it kinda does when it's influence is enough.
what is it part of then? grunge? cause AiC are pretty much a metal band and they're labeled "grunge".
don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming every band that's part of the nu-metal label are metal. I personally wouldn't consider Linkin Park as such. but I wouldn't dismiss the genre as not metal entirely either.

They're an offshoot of grunge, which itself is a subgenre of rock. There are some nu-metal bands that probably fall closer to metal than to rock, but Korn is not one of them.

Regardless, nu-metal is dead and the entire world should be thankful. It was never good.

>They're an offshoot of grunge, which itself is a subgenre of rock.
Not exactly, most would agree that grunge as a genre was complicated, it was punk, metal, and rock all at once. Nu-metal logically being heavier made it lean towards metal. Korn seems heavy enough if you asked me, don't see why wouldn't you consider them "metal".
Genre isn't entirely dead either, there seems to be a resurgence, but it's probably just a passing trend. Who knows, we'll have to wait and see.

Korn isn't so bad. Limo Bizkit is shit except for Wes Morland. Linkin Park is total shit though. Nu metal doesn't seem so bad biw because contemporary music is even more shitty.

Everyone in Limp Bizkit is a superior musician to the talentless hacks in Korn.

>stigma
It has a stigma because the lyrics were rather juvenile and the genre got shat on by both the mainstream crowd and the metal purists.
I don't know of any nu-metal acts now. Soundcloud rap seems to represent the diy and anti-establishment aspects that nu-metal used to have. There are other connections like Bones being friends with Fred Durst.

Literally the most boring nu metal band. No wonder it's the RYM-Zig Forums approved band in the genre.

Metalheads will claim bands likeSlipknot and Korn are not metal while calling athmospheric shit with the slightest black metal influence TRVE KVLT metal.
Metalheads are fucking retarded.

You are strawmanning. Metal-archives.com is idiotic and doesn't speak for everyone, not including Slipknot (after their first couple albums they started to sound an awful lot like a traditional metal band save the clown hitting the trash can) is just silly bias on their part.

Shut up, gatekeeping nigger faggot.

So Les Rallizes Dénudes are metal in your book?

Why do you talk like this? It's not tough or cool.

I still listen to Slipknot every now and then for fun \m/

Why do you care about looking tough or cool? Why are your feelings hurt?

They seeme to think if you liked nu metal you looked and dressed a certain way like you wore JNCO pants and wallet chains which is totally BS because I liked nu metal and to me it was just music I always wore what I liked.

>It's not new, and it's not metal!

Of all the nu-Metal bands popping up in that era, how the fuck were Deftones too manufactured? They formed in 1988 and had been putting out material since 1992. They were a band for seven years before getting signed and releasing Adrenaline in 1995, and in 1995 nu-metal hadn’t even blown up yet (Have to hand it to Korn for releasing their debut in 1994 as well). If anything Deftones were as real as Korn. To me a manufactured band wouldn’t have the same long comeup. The dudes from Deftones aren’t “tapped in the head” but that shouldn’t matter, you can make genuine music without being mentally ill
