I was looking for the latest 'background noise' show to put on and I thought I would give King of the Hill a shot. I'm really trying to like it but the show is really good at making you feel uncomfortable, I don't think it is right for me.
Anything you like to throw on in the background while doing things?
>the show is really good at making you feel uncomfortable I didn't get that feeling at all. The first season was the definition of comfy.
Elijah Collins
Maybe it's just not for you, King of the Hill is super comfy for me. That said, Bobs Burgers is pretty easy to keep going in the background. I draw a lot, so I'll either listen to music or have cartoons playing, I actually just finished binging through all the seasons of KotH. Great stuff. Other stuff I've been watching in the background, Jimmy Neutron, DC Superhero Girls, Avatar, first few seasons of Spongebob, Clone High. And more I can't think of off the top of my head, those are just shows I've seen already and can easily go back to for background noise.
Any specific scenes? I think it’s great for background noise
Jose King
I get the vibe that King of the Hill is only comfy if you come from or are familiar with the rural American White conservative protestant culture that's presented in the show. A lot of foreigners i've met don't find it funny or cozy at all.
Camden Perez
You just sound weak, mate. There exist shows with cringe comedy that exist to make you laugh and feel uncomfortable. I think peep show is one of those shows.
Liam Carter
I find it comfy. It just goes downhill with Hank.
Nolan James
Only Bill heavy storylines tend to be uncomfortable. The rest is pretty comfy
Daniel Ortiz
>you need to be "blank" to relate to it This will always be a shitty excuse for autismos that don't understand basic human interaction
Gabriel Morris
They must be the type of foreigners who do not assimilate to western society well.. They should go back home. We don't need nutcases killing americans because of sharia law.
Nolan Wood
its a reminder to never go full Bill. if you feel uncomfortable while watching Bill because "it hits too close to home", then stop, assess your life, and turn it around.
Angel Wilson
Just say you have autism
Xavier Watson
A lot of the more personal stuff with Bill doesn't sit right with me. Usually by the end of the episodes there is a satisfying conclusion, but sometimes how the adults interact with kids or, like I said, some of the Bill scenes make me pretty uncomfortable.
The episode I am on right now is season 3's Christmas episode about Bill and his ex-wife. I don't think it's like that for me, I think it's just that watching a very 'real' character (The writing is very good) go through something like this makes me want to help him, and lacking that ability makes me really uneasy or something.
First 2 of spongebob are great, 3 is alright too. Usually stop around there.
Colton Stewart
No my autism is too bad and I'm hypersensitive to sounds so I can never filter anything out very well. Especially on cable because of the goddamn commercials.
Parker Peterson
I had that problem for a while. I worked on it for a while by having something on in the background, muted, as I was doing things. I had to work on it for a bit to be able to ignore it, but eventually I could glance up, watch for a few seconds, then go back to reading.
Then after a bit I started listening to music while having a video muted in the background, all while reading. It took less effort than I thought but it still took some time.
I'm working on being able to have a stream open and being able to ignore it while I do something in the background. I think that is going to be useful to me, like help me binge shows that I don't think are worth my full attention.
Nathaniel Russell
>uneasy about not being able to help a character I dont get that from king of the hill, but I do know that feel
Dominic Jackson
Things you've already watched. I've got a buddy who likes to fall asleep to old episodes of The Office on Netflix. If you've got something that's new to you, it's going to draw your attention too much.
Hudson Murphy
As a liberal city dwelling minority, KotH is vital watching because it humanises the conservative outlook in a way that is generally lacking, even from conservative outlets. Hank Hill is what a lot of anons here claim to be but clearly fall short of.
Kayden Peterson
This. I had been using Avatar for background noise but I had to stop because it’d been 10 years since I’d seen it so I didn’t remember anything and I kept missing things and had to keep rewinding so I could pay more attention. It’s best to use things you already know so you’re not missing out on the full experience
Mason Morgan
I'll always have either archer or mike tyson mysteries playing on my phone while im cooking. I still get a good giggle from the jokes.
Jack Ward
I feel for him not so much that I can't help him, but that any progress he DOES make has to be destroyed to maintain his position as the show's loser character. Any time he gets ahead in life, its taken away from him, either by contrivance like losing his muscle mass or Kahn's mom; or it just disappears at the end of the episode because they couldn't find a believable way to take it away from him.
Asher Allen
There's a German word - fremdscham - a profound feeling of sympathy towards another's discomfort, misfortune, or suffering. It's basically the converse of schadenfreude. It doesn't necessarily mean someone identifies with a person or character, just that they sympathize with them to such an extent that it is uncomfortable to watch them embarrass, humiliate, or ruin themselves.
this is the reason i have such a hard time watching 'awkward comedies' like Parks and Rec, The Office, etc
Joshua Young
I don't get the feeling as much from Park and Rec but definitely from the Office. Something about how Steve Carell delivers everything just makes you feel that stinging feeling of wanting to tell him what he is doing wrong.
Justin Edwards
Futurama
Carter Nguyen
Yeah, you put it in words. I tried to watch it because a girl I was talking to liked it, and between him, Dwight, and the awkward bits with Jim and Pam, I had to turn it off quite a few times. I don't understand women.
My family *loves* The Office and on more than one occasion while visiting home around the holidays I've found excuses to leave the room when they watch it.
