One flaw of Avatar: The Last Airbender was the freedom the crew had. Throughout the show's production, freedom was their greatest strength. But, at the same time, they were kind of flying by the seat of their pants. It's the reason why Suki got brought back in. She was a one-off character that returned due to fan demand. But it's also the reason why Zuko ended up with Mai. Nobody expected Elizabeth Ehasz and Lauren MacMullan to come up with Zuko Alone. When they did, Mai immediately became the most likely person to end up with Zuko due to how good the episode was and how much that episode leaned on a possible Zuko/Mai pairing.
