That's mostly because Cusack doesn't have a cult following as big as Zach's, most of the people who have seen Smiling Friends didn't even watch the entire April Fools event. Let's be honest most of the popularity of Smiling Friends comes from the fact that it was made by an e-celeb.

This. The industry is very much interested in Cusack and he has worked around. Hadel's opportunity came from the fact he piggybacked off Cusack at a shot for something. Its hype is generated from having a (lets face it) obsessive audience online which is why the pilot was all it got. Most of Smiling Friends is recycled jokes from things Hadel made in the past or even lifted from friends (Oney, Hotdiggitydemon) alongside cameos of friends. It essentially exists as a project to say "hey look we are on TV" with the hopes people online will spam it into being greenlit. Hadel's career is derivative of the people around him while Cusack is able to consistently be original and was who the network was initially interested in.
