ITT: Mary sues/gary stus in comics/cartoons

Pic slightly related, couldn't think of a Zig Forums mary sue so I'm just gonna use her.

>Mary sues/gary stus in comics/cartoons

But this term is always used incorrectly.
A Mary sue is an op character created by yourself, for some fanfic set in a story not yours. For the internet language now it simply means "character that I don't like".

Shill detected. That is the whole point that writing in media nowadays can be so bad it drastically resembles the quality of fanfiction to the point you can see Mary Sue on the big screen. It is even hard to find Mary Sue in the original IP. They are all written ON TOP of already existing settings and stories which heavely implies on how it works.

>Shill
speaking of words that mean nothing now

Stardust the super wizard

No it isn't, it's a masturbatory authorial self-insert used for vicarious wish-fulfillment, the term sourced from a satire of OC characters in Star Trek fanfics.

They don't necessarily need to be OP (or even set in fan-fiction really). All that matters is that an insecure author is clearly getting their rocks off. For example, if you wrote a Harry Potter fanfic where your self-insert is just a weak/modest student, they would still be a Sue if you get good grades, do well in sports, are adored by all the girls, triumph over jealous bullies, basically everything that didn't happen to you in real life.

It's just that most writers of the caliber that would make an unironic Sue can't really stop there, they go "I'm Voldemort's secret long lost son, and I'm amazing at all types of magic, and I'm a black dragon animagus, and Dementors don't work on me since I have no happy memories because I had such a cold hard life" etcetera, etcetera, so on so forth.

But it’s not fanfiction if it’s from the creator of the story

Your point makes no sense, if you wanna call it bad, call it bad, don’t call it fanfiction or whatever else buzzword you feel like testing out

Let me start with "The Orange Whore Who Shall Not Be Named".

In the first to second season yes, but later on she was broken out of her sue-eeness.

Nah I think he kinda has a point.
Rey is obviously not a self-insert for J.J Abrams, but she's clearly all about wish-fulfillment, in this case for little girls. Poor, patronized little girls. Plus where do you want to draw the line at original work or fan-fiction in this case, George Lucas or rights ownership?

orange buttcheeks tho

Mary Sue is just code for character I dislike now.It used to mean self inserts or character without flaws.
Korra was never a Mary Sue. She was a flawed character from the start and had setbacks.

Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano
Now what faggot?

No! You have doomed us all!

Star Butterfly.
She killed so many people and got away with it.

On Zig Forums, every character is a Mary Sue even when they aren't.

Character goes full retard? Mary Sue!!!

Character fails? Mary Sue!!!

Character is a well adjusted person? Mary Sue!!!

Character is competent(especially if they're female)? Mary Sue!!!

Character doesn't go full retard? Mary Sue!!!

Mary Sue is nothing more than a meaningless term now.

Mary Sues are more characters seen as perfect in-universe, always in the right, occasionally overpowered. Eclipsa is more a Sue than Star

>characters seen as perfect in-universe, always in the right, occasionally overpowered
Sounds like a perfect description of Scott Buck's Dexter Morgan.

Neither Eclipsa nor Star were Sues.

Eclipsa's whole 'living for myself and my family no matter what' philisophy caused problems directly and indirectly.

Star made too many mistakes and questionable decisions to be a Sue of any kind.

I don't use term Mery Sue lightly

How is Kipo a Mary Sue?

Korra's not a Mary Sue, she's just a totally stagnant character that never develops.

Korra's not a Mary Sue, just an unlikable dipshit

Isn't it a character that gets introduced to an already established series who is now the central focus in some way? For example, Scrappy Doo.
Often, it's in the context of fanfic, but the way I see it, if the creator of an already established work is no longer involved and the story starts to revolve around a new character rather than the established characters, it's basically a corporate sanctioned fanfic.
To go for non-Zig Forums examples (cuz I can't think of many Zig Forums ones right now), Star Trek Discovery's Michael Burnham is not a Mary Sue because she wasn't added to the crew of an already existing ST show, instead starring in her own series set in the same universe while Seven-of-Nine is a Mary Sue because she was added to the Voyager crew and then all plot lines thereafter began to revolve around her. Does that make sense?
