Why do many Cartoon critics dislike Family Guy for being mean-spirited, edgy, and having unlikable characters while praising South Park despite having the same flaws as Family Guy?
Why do many Cartoon critics dislike Family Guy for being mean-spirited, edgy...
South Park can actually be serious when it wants too (Raisins, Kenny Dies, You're Getting Old)
Family Guy HEAVILY botches it's more serious episodes (Seahorse Seashell Party, Screams in Silence)
Butters is a very likable character
Because South Park reminds everyone we live in a society
You think south park fans arent bitching about the quality of the latest seasons?
Only because Randy
Peak south park was a lot more clever and funny than FG.
That being said even the worst of FG is superior to the state of modern south park
Bait, Family Guy has serious episodes too like Road to Rhode Island, From Method to Madness, Brian Wallows Peter Swallows, Adam West High etc... all of which has emotional moments that aren't played for laughs.
Because South Park used to understand actual nuance, something that Family Guy hasn't had since like 2002.
Re-read user's post m8.
He said that Family Guy botches its serious episodes, which it does.
Including almost all of the episodes you just posted.
The only edgy mean character is Cartman
Family Guy s1-s2 was another level. Actually funny and the characters had hearts.
Because EVERY FG character is an unlikable cunt who acts like a giant piece of shit, whereas South Park at least has characters like Butters, Stan, Kyle, Kenny, Jimmy, and (kind of) Token who aren't COMPLETELY unlikable.
Hes a pretty big reason to complain but theres more to it.
>Because EVERY FG character is an unlikable cunt who acts like a giant piece of shit,
False, these are still likable:
>Joe
>Seamus
>Opie
>Tricia Takanawa
>Ollie Williams
>Carl
>Jillian
>Greased-up Deaf Guy
>Kevin Swanson
>Stella
>Max
>Horace
>Eddie the Ostrich
they mean main characters. the characters who make up 95% of the show
Every single character you just mentioned is a one-note character that only exists as a joke, and most of them barely even exist in most modern episodes.
Even if the show's gone on for too long or focused on a character people are now sick of, South Park's creators at least understand how basic satire works and can run with that while making cruel jokes or have bad things happen at the expense of their characters. But they still deliver, even if they've been reduced to a sort of "The complainer is always wrong" mentality when it comes to making fun of people.
Family Guy started off as a savage deconstruction of the TV Sitcom, died, resurrected and has resorted mostly to shock value humor to keep itself going and *that's it*. There's no deeper between the lines meaning to anything or any thought or opinions. Any given episode will hastily wrap up whatever plot's going on before the credits, but not before trying to cram in the most shocking thing they can come up with that week.
South Park has one-note shit too like Kenny, Timmy, Jimbo, Goth Kids, Mr. Mackey etc.. who mainly do one catchphrase or are stereotypes
>Cripple joke
>Old sailor
>Retard
>Asian stereotype
>Loud black man
>Weed store clerk who spouts movie references
>Dumb blonde
>Joke character
>PTSD war veteran
>Deaf girl
>Jew who is good with money
>Bartender
>Joke character
None of these are fully fleshed characters
Kenny has VASTLY more of a character than literally any of the characters you mentioned.
He's poor, a pervert and dies all the time, that's it
Joe is the only character there's who's fleshed out and even then, he's mostly pathetic cripple jokes
Why the fuck are there so many South Park vs Family Guy threads recently? It feels like we have one everyday.
I grew up with SP, so im biased honestly.
And he’s a superhero
Why do people hate mean spirited and edgy so much? I love both these shows and their characters and I like how they are. They are giant douche bags but that's the charm. They aren't good people, and they're fun to watch. Not everything needs to cute and moral.
Being an asshole isn't humor
I'm going to assume that you're an ESL.
Likely Hispanic.
This.
Furthermore, most of the characters in FG lack charisma, and many are cruel. Peter is a murderer and is hardly ever held responsible for that.
Instead, South Park is aware that Cartman has murdered and almost never wins, and when he does, everyone knows he did something horrible. It also helps that the show has a fairly unique art style.
That happened like 15 years after the show came out, and even then they forced it by intentionally making his parents unlikable so we can sympathize with Kenny, and him having a strong bond with his little sister, who didn't even exist until that time.
Basically, they pulled a Brian Griffin, ruin other characters in order to fleshen out a flat character.
Because, appearance-wise, most of the South Park kids are too damn adorable.
Kenny was always more of a character than his parents were.
