All I know about this is the offhand reference by the Simpsons

Yeah, it's kinda worth checking out. The period to look at is like around 1992-2007. The real flaw is that if you're following it daily it really drags out, and sometimes Batiuk writes contrived ways to make something super-depressing.

All you really need to know about the 70's comics is that it was a gag-a-day comic strip back then. Then around the 80's a few more serious stories came up, and then in 1992 the characters graduated high school and then Tom Batiuk did a timeskip, jumping four years ahead to where the characters were now adults, with two of them having teaching jobs at the high school they used to go to. The 90's was when Batiuk put in more dramatic storylines and by the 00's people started feeling like it was really depressing. Then in 2007 he had one of the characters die from cancer and then did another timejump, this time by 10 years, so now all those characters you remembered being in high school during the 70's and 80's are now middle-aged.
Here's a story about Funky's first marriage and then his alcoholism, then his divorce, and then his second marriage. I don't have all the comics though.
