No but see that doesn't explain HOW he was redeemed.
Bill, from very early on in the comic, was shown to have anger issues and a superiority complex. He's the president of the club, the top dog in the pack, and when he's put in a situation where his status is compromised, he defaults to violence and rage to fight instead of taking the L.
This reached a turning point in "The Intervention" chapter where he was literally kidnapped by two grown men and forced to give up everything he's ever loved and listen to a thorough, but ultimately useless, verbal beating about how he's a pathetic loser with no future, and how giving up his nerd hobbies was the only way to find prosperity. This is wrong, fundamentally, and it sealed Bill's future as a jaded, self-obsessed (and self-righteous) douchebag.

They reached a point during their "treatment" where Bill finally started to come around and admit he was miserable, admit that he was unhappy. But instead of trying to figure out the REAL reasons, they just doubled down and insisted that going cold turkey was the only option. If they'd tried to show him that his behavior, his attitude towards others was the key reason he was so miserable, and that it's possible to enjoy nerdy geeky shit without making it into an obsessive centerpiece of your life, maybe, JUST maybe they could've gotten somewhere with him.
Unlikely, though, and his mother honestly should have gotten him therapy as soon as she noticed his spiral into helpless, irredeemability. But she seemed like she didn't know or care enough to raise him properly anyway (especially after her divorce) so the entire situation is just really an unfortunate result of the worst outcomes coming to fruition.
Bill's tragedy is that he was completely capable of being a happy, functional member of society, but his own hubris and mental illness stopped him, and without a support system of people who REALLY cared about him, he stagnated.
