I think Madonna would've worked better than Elise because she both looks more cartoony and I could see her fighting along side Sonic later on in it's lifespan where Elise was always gonna be a damsel in distress.

Sincerely not trolling here, I’m not super familiar with Sonic lore but while the game was being made why didn’t it occur to the devs that the fairy tale romance was weird as fuck? Why not >redesign Soleanna as an anthro populated area Or >make it an excuse to introduce Princess Sally + FFs (pre Penders law shenanigans) Hell if anything the latter could’ve been a scapegoat for why 2006 failed beyond its gameplay

It's not that weird. It was a popular trend in the 80s and 90s thanks to movies like Roger Rabbit. What makes it weird in Sonic 06 is that it's a self-serious story and Elise looks like a realistic Final Fantasy character.

Because the producer of 2006 was a newcomer to the franchise, and the director didn't work in a Sonic game since 1998. Combine this with Naka leaving halfway through and Iizuka not being around to help, and you get the idea.

It seems weird now and it was still weird then but consider that in 06 mascot platformers were all but dead except Mario and Sonic and Sandbox open-world/realistic games had taken over the market, especially in America. Sega was probably at a loss on how to deal with that.

Pretty much. 3D platformers were seen as a dying genre back when 06 was being made ( Sunshine didn't sell as well as Nintendo hoped, Psychonauts was a flop, Sly 3 was a flop, etc ) Even the platformers that sold well like Ratchet and Jak had more emphasis on shooting and vehicles than actual platforming

Nah, the musicians gave their best for 06. It was the director and producer who screwed up, plus Sega's terrible manegement ( splitting the team in half to make a Wii port, which became that half assed on rails game )
