New mutants movie

Yup. It's available now on your favorite torrent website.
I watched it yesterday.
It's... difficulty for me to say something, I'm really attached to the New Mutants, they are my favorite "teen team" and one of my favorite marvel books
Spoilers up, beware
it's a short movie, only 1h30 long. It has a lot of bad stuff going for it, like, the release hell it had because of the disney/fox business deal, and later the covid- pandemic that ruined everything else.
Seeing these characters alive at the screen gave me a good feel, but when they get it wrong, it's also a bit offensive for me as a fan.
It get some characters relatively wrong (Illyana/Magik the most I think, she's basically Bullyana in the movie, a wrong take on her "evil side", as Magik is, at first, very self conscious on what she is when she first joins the team, somewhat like Rahne), but she's also part of the fun of the movie, you'll probably enjoy Bullyana and Anya Taylor Joy is always good to watch. I'm a bit disappointed, because imo, Magik, her origin and limbo should have been the second movie of a trilogy, and the Demon Bear the last one.

She's portrayed by Anya Taylor Joy that is the perfect cast, the script just doesn't help much, and I know that Anya could pull a more comic-book 80s Magik if well written (unlike the current angry badass lady with a sword people try to push these days). Oh and she has no "origin" like the comics, just some weird shit smiling shit. And Lockheed, dunno why if there's no Kitty.

Surprisingly, I think Rahne was the most well done character, Maisie Williams did a good job, akin to the early game of thrones years that her character, Arya, was scared and vulnerable.
Sam's part was too shallow, he's the best boy of the team and the big brother, if I could give the movie a few more minutes, I would use it to improve Sam.
Sunspot was another victim of the plot I guess, they could have just tanned Henry Zaga a bit to look more like Bobby.

Next post I'll talk about Dani.

Magik's accent was fucking awful.

>perfectly cast
>awfully written

Wait this came out??

It got a limited theatrical release because they had a standing distribution contract they had to honor before they could put it up on any streaming services.

Now, Dani Moonstar. I liked Dani. In the comics she's more wise and mature than the other girls (and eventually a team leader) but here she's in her most vulnerable, her father just died (the reason we found out that it was the Bear) and she fit well with Rahne (too well, they went for the lesbian route), and when Bullyana attacks her, she fights back, fiercely, and they got it right.
The mystery of the movie are her powers. Look, it's a weird situation: if you know the characters, you know Dani's power and therefore no mystery at all, but if you don't know the characters, you have little to no reason to care about the movie.
Oh and Blu Hunt is cute as fuck and has much bigger boobs than I thought she had. Seriously.
Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga) is a decent character, Alice is clearly the most experienced and the better actress there, but she didn't had much to do, she's not the villain, the twist with her is that she works for Mr. Sinister (Essex corporation), not Xavier but she was just science women and trying her best for the kids she didn't want to do what they asked for her to do about Dani.

The fight with the bear was okay, since these New Mutants had little to no experience, they couldn't combo like in the comics. They group together to protect Dani that was in a sort of coma, fighting her inner demons to control her powers. And man, Dani really out-boob everyone.

5/10 movie, 6/10 if you care about the new mutants but it's painful to know that their only chance of having a movie, in the golden era of capeshit... was wasted.
I THINK that maybe Anya Taylor Joy's Magic can show up in the MCU together with Colossus in a Deadpool movie, but that's it.
Rest in peace, new mutants.

are you insane

watched it yesterday too, it's terrible
not like, bad bad, just.. blehh, nothing stands out whatsoever
Magik was well cast and her powers looked cool, for the 120 seconds total we saw em. Even Limbo was shown for a nanosecond and not spoken of. Same with Lockheed. Would have been cool to learn something about her/lore. But that's part of what's missing here. Just paper thin. More like an episode of a CW show than a feature film. The fact that it takes place in one drab green building with no other cast, save for Reyes, who we also learn nothing about and who's running is awkwardly hilarious makes it seem so cheap. Seriously, the entire flick was a succession of scenes in which
'LOUD BANG or ALARM"
"What was that?"
(Reyes does a silly run toward noise) and repeat
It was so insular, so stiffling. No hint of a larger world except one X-Men namedrop. No actual antagonist, even though it was CLEAR Sinister was to be the final act reveal. The edgy smiling men were whack. The Demon Bear wasn't even spoken of or meaningful in anyway, just briefly happened. Also Magik as an absolutely off-putting bully was a choice. Save your 90 minutes.

Forgot to add the accents were just off the wall. Sam's southern drawl, Rahne's scottish brogue, all over the place.

>Who are you?
>We're Fox's New Mutants© in association with Walt Disney Entertainment
Fucking seriously?

Never read the comics, so I'm only coming into this as a movie.
Main girl was completely bland, cardboard actress. There was a clear point when the movie had a tonal change, and the fire guy started spouting quips.
A lot of boring "people standing around looking smug and important" shots that you'd normally find in b-movies with underwritten scenes.
CGI-fest of an ending that felt out of place.
The final product confirms every pre-release rumor about studio meddling and rewrites. The most positive thing I can say for it is that in a few days, I won't remember a damn thing from it.

My take on Dani was that they got the character wrong. I think it was because Illyana was already the movie's Alpha Bitch, so the calmed Dani down to the point that she was unrecognizable.

Maise did fine as Rahne, but I winched my way through the scene with her eeeeeeeeeevil father.

I agree with you that Sam and Roberto got shorted -- and that was a real shame. But all in all, this was a female-dominated movie.

And about halfway through, I found myself thinking 'does everyone really need to have a backstory where they killed someone?' It seemed excessive.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but I recognize its flaws and understand why so many people didn't like it.

I'm going to upload some webms another user was making on the Zig Forums thread

if you capture the few seconds Magik uses her powers, that's a fine substitute for actually watching the entire thing

I agree with you, but they went for a vulnerable dani route that in the comics we really only get on the demon bear saga
and they inverted roles a bit, like, in the comics, it's magik that is the newcomer and dani was already the alpha bitch (but good and supportive, not a bully) and magik is the self conscious one
so that's why I understand movie's Dani not being more like how we know her, I mean, they just dropped her into a sanatorium after her father died
the "backstory where they killed someone" was needed to justify why they are "locked" as dangerous babies

Magik being a racist asshole was weird

Most of the foX-men are

Dose the director have a thing for casting girls with weird faces?

I do that a lot with my work, It makes them stand out more

I know it's from the demon bear saga (right?) I have the trade on cmx, but where do I read more about this team?
>Especially Magik

you can begin from the beginning of it all.

New Mutants #1 v1 by Chris Claremont, there's also a Marvel Graphic Novel #4 with origin of some of the members.
Magik comes a little bit later to the team, at issue #14, but Illyana Rasputin, the 6/7 years old sister of Russian mutant Colossus was around the main X-man book (in Colossus origin he saved her from an accident by turning into metal for the first time).
And how she turns from a 7yo kid into the 14 yo teenager? well, there's a 4 issues mini that explain everything about Magik's origin.

It's a really good run, a gem from 80s MarvelX-Men
At first it can feel a bit weird and dated, especially because Claremont is so woody, but you'll learn how to quick skip the explanations (like, that rahne can turn into a werewolf/wolf every issue). And when Magik joins, it became really fun. Also, don't forget to read the annuals, there are some very very good.
