It would probably be fine it it was done to parody like making them all talk like pirates or aussies (seriously get on it).
user's suggestion would probably be taking things too seriously. If anyone's going down that path at least draw your own damn OC with a different plot to fit the characters.
It's good for 2 reasons: the new comic isn't tied to anything to keep going, and the original artist would have little reason to hate it if it gets popular.
