I will forever hate the Christina Ricci movie for forever ruining Wednesday Addams. She's not supposed to be a dreary, dime-a-dozen, moody goth like Lucy Loud or any other goth character in cartoons. She's supposed to be a typical little girl, but her interests just have a morbid twist like torturing her dolls, poisoned tea parties, or dead and skeleton little animals.

Going by the look of the original comic was commercial suicide.
People expect and want the Disney/Pixar look, if you're going to go for something else it need to be good looking, this looks like the type of character design quality you'd find in a 3d children's cartoon on television.
It would not have been 'fresh', but even so, a Glen Keane style design would at least have looked great.

This (though it's not the actresses fault, it's the directors). Compare her in the old TV series or the cartoon series, she really isn't gloomy at all. She has some typical "girly" moments like how she loves to dance, and some tomboyish traits like how she'll get into fist fights with boys at school. Since the live action movies, she really has just become a stereotypical goth teen archetype.
