Emmy the Robot - Official Comic

Hello and good morning/afternoon/night anons! A little earlier than I'd want but a thread on Saturday is a thread on Saturday! Today's comic will hopefully answer some questions that you anons have had on the subject of nandroid dreams. It also raises some more questions about nandroid memory, dreaming and their own emotional maturity and 'humanity'. So - do nandroids have similar dream functions to us (meaning a 'summary' of daily events with some distortions), or a more random form of dreaming based on replaying memories? How does a nandroid's software sort what memories are pleasant to dream versus which are unpleasant? Does this suggest nandroids might have nightmares? Is a nandroid's AI complex or 'human' enough to produce the same distortions in a dream we're so familiar with?

To add on to that, we were introduced to "Bobby", a police-use nandroid, so some other questions we could talk about would be the use of a robot in a broader city-wide use, especially one built on a nandroid's chassis. We talked about them being good secretaries and excellent with paperwork and logistics, but what uses beyond maid-work and police work could nandroids fit into as a niche?

I'll post a little more for now to give the thread a kickstart, mostly about this sweet policedroid. What I wondered about is what necessary structural changes would be required to make a nandroid's frame suitable to a more 'rough and tumble' line of work like policing. Would nandroids be police-trained in the factory by experts, or shipped 'blank' to precincts for training?

Core education training with specialized policing training. Highly unlikely they'd be doing standard policing....so just neighborhood patrolling, meter maids, and desk work.

Well, suppose a city has a desperate need for officers, but the 'supply' of willing cadets is smaller than needed. What modifications would or could Sterling make to a nandroid to make them beat-ready?

uhhh i want bobby to beat with a baton hnnnnnn

in my horny fueled daze i missed the word me

She'd be perfect as a meter maid. You can yell at her for giving a ticket and you're hurting nobody's feelings

Well that's something to consider, though. Knowing nandroids, their overzealous taking to meter-maiding would eventually incite more than angry words

Give them sturdier frames and enhanced motor functions, beyond that they already have the pepper spray and other self defense capabilities.
They'd just need actual training and to be taught how to use weapons. Integrating a firearm (even rubber bullets) would be too time consuming and costly, use what's already there.

I guess this picture is now unfortunately debunked. Also, I guess "sleep mode" and the "sleep" the Nandroids go into while being delivered a different things. I guess they're totally shut off when they're packaged. Makes sense, no reason to run the battery for an indeterminate amount of time.

I think Nandroids' "dreams" are much more precise than a living thing's dreams. The comic makes it sound like it's just recorded memories flashing by while the hard drive scans for new recordings to back up. The scan lines in Emmy's memories make it seem more like randomly looking through security tapes than actual dreams, at least as we understand them. I like Emmy's take on dreams though, it's a nice positive outlook on something that's typically out of our control.

I suppose a "nightmare" for a Nandroid would be revisiting a bad memory, like failing to complete a task or seeing an unfortunate event. I imagine Franny probably has a lot of those, considering she seems to have some difficulty with some tasks that the other Nandroids don't. I wonder if Nandroids take "nightmares" as a kind of punishment, like a dog having his nose shoved into its own piss on a rug or something. "See this? You fucked up. DON'T DO IT AGAIN."

In theory, perhaps but Nandroids are built with purpose, so having an AI create random scenarios in it's head that have no immediate or beneficial use might be worrying cause it might lead to independent thought, and we all know what happens when a robot has too much independent thought.

uhh i thought that they do have independent thought, that's why they send em to nandroid school

It could be a subroutine of sort so they don't get complacent.
If the "dreams" are used like a sort of positive reinforcement, it could entirely be beneficial (if each time you do a good Jobe you get pleasant dreams at night, you're not going to stop giving a shit), or even help the nandroid cope in case she end up in a bad household.

And like said they have independent thought, they are just very loyal and diligent.
I don't like making HP references, but it's kind of like the house elves. They are basically slaves but they love helping their masters.

I think that makes a lot of sense user. My interpretation of nandroids dreaming is something more aligned with how Data starts to dream in TNG, mostly random(ish) situations based around what he's familiar with, and I could see nandroid dreams being weird mashups of their normal world and elements of it altered

Amy must have a wild time then, since she already confused movies with real life. I can't imagine the sort of madness her mind cook up when trying to use parts of her day.

>Amy has dreams about movies she doesn't remember seeing or thinks were real
>enthusiastically shares her story ideas on the trolley only to be told it existed already
>her dulhan story was probably a dream too

hmmm
How nandroids reacts to drunk human?

They're probably very patient with them unless they get rowdy, in which case they probably leave them to their own devices, find someone to help the drunk get home, or defend themselves if the drunk is proving dangerous, and possibly call the authorities if their behavior escalates.

If ti's their owners, probably give them some water and something to eat, and leave a glass with pills to deal with the headache in the morning, next to the bed.

>random scenarios in it's head that have no immediate or beneficial use
Think of it like a mental screen-saver, maybe it's not good for a nandroid fixate on one event/thing for a full 8 hour recharge and varying up what she thinks about is healthier for them?

>we have our memories back up to the hard drive
If your nandroid gets trashed beyond repair, could Sterling send you a cheaper replacement that you can upload your previous droid's memory into?

An important detail might be a suspension of some higher brain function, that is to say when we dream we're usually not aware that we're dreaming (excepting lucid dreaming) which gives dreams their strange sensation in addition to the mish-mash of imagery. To make sleepmode analogous to human sleep, I'd think a dreaming nandroid would not immediately be able to tell she was dreaming any more than you or I could.

Gonna colorize the other Bobbys, colorman?

Will you accept the use of U in colour?

I wonder if they know what drunkenness looks like and how to carefully handle it, or if they just view their drunk master as 'acting strange tonight'?
No, but I'll pretend to for you

The dancing reminds me of that one Calvin and Hobbes comic where they're dancing to classical music played at 78rpm in the middle of the night
