There's many Taiwanese that consider their nation to be a seperate entity from China, so they claim their nation is Taiwan and they're not "Chinese". So my guess is that they'd rather keep being independent than get fucked by the international community for attacking Mainland China (which would be ironic because then it would be consider a state declaring war against a state, thus recognizing their sovereignty).
