A man has been given a 15 year extended sentence – the first nine years of which will be served in custody – after he admitted raping a teenage girl he followed off a Bristol bus.
Michael Murray, 29, of no fixed address, followed his victim off the No. 24 bus when it stopped on Stapleton Road before attacking her on nearby Belle Vue Road on 9 January.
His victim was able to provide a detailed description of her attacker and Murray was caught after detectives found CCTV footage of him in the area around the time of the incident.
Murray appeared via video link at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday (7 April) where he pleaded guilty to rape and a separate charge of common assault in which he hit a woman’s face with a lit cigarette after she rebuffed his advances.

Emdadul Lukman, 47, and Jakhir Hussain, 37, were sentenced yesterday (Thursday) at St Albans Crown Court after a jury unanimously found them guilty of multiple counts of rape and inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
The investigation began in February 2018 after the victim revealed the horrific abuse she had endured when both men stayed at her family home for a short period when she was a child.
She described how Lukman and Hussain both manipulated and groomed her into taking part in sexual activity with each of them, by paying her attention, empathising with her, playing board games, and buying her sweets and gifts.
Now an adult, she decided to tell her mother and husband what had happened to her, which resulted in the abuse being reported to police and both men arrested.
After a two-week trial, Lukman, of Waldegrave Street, Hastings, was found guilty of six counts of raping a girl under the age of 13 and two counts of causing/inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Hussain, of Keymer Court, Burgess Hill, was found guilty of three counts of raping a girl under the age of 13 and three counts of causing/inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity and was jailed for 20 years. Both men must serve their whole term.

Two brothers who used their convenience stores to groom teenage white girls with free sweets and crisps have been jailed for committing a string of sexual offences. Nine girls, mostly aged between 14 and 16, were targeted as they visited shops in the Wirral, Merseyside, owned by Ilvarasan Rajenthiram, 25, and Vinothan Rajenthiram, 27. The brothers, from Birkenhead, gained the friendship of the girls by giving them free sweets, crisps and drinks, including alcohol, at their stores in Birkenhead, Walton and Garston between 2010 and 2016.
Both men were known to their victims as Ara and Vino.
‘These two men were calculating individuals who knew exactly what they were doing. ‘In most cases they gained the trust of the young girls and then took the relationship further by coercing the girls, who were under the age of consent, to take part in sexual activity after plying them with alcohol.
'On other occasions they sexually assaulted other girls, who were with the girls already befriended by the offenders, who came into the shop. ‘They are sexual predators who went to extraordinary lengths to groom their victims. ‘The victims mistakenly believed that these men genuinely had feelings for them and they didn’t realise that they were being groomed and sexually exploited. ‘The realisation of the fact that they have been sexually exploited, used and abused has had a profound and lasting negative impact on these young women, which could impact on them as they move in to adulthood and could seriously affect their ability to trust people in the future.'
