Now it is seen as one of the most beautiful cities in the UK, but it was a living hell in the past... Why do we love these historical cities so much?

.

Probably for the nostalgia, I suppose

enjoy your swamp

Most of the worst parts were demolished in the earth 20th century. So you don't see the hell that people lived in

Because it's objectively beautiful.

Why are the streets so wide compared to the houses?

looks like it would be so nice to live in back in the day...

It does...? We still maintained cities and cleaned the streets in the past.

Soul.

that is false... it had no sewage system until mid 19th century....
also
>Nowadays the historic city centre around Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town, is a bewildering delight of winding passages and cobbled lanes, full of pubs, restaurants, boutique shops and arts venues. But in the 18th century it represented the very worst in medieval squalor. Prone to fires, repeatedly ravaged by disease, it was notorious for its drunkenness, malevolent ghosts and violent crime. The 50,000 residents and freely wandering livestock were trapped in its narrow streets, defensive walls, steep ravines and tottering tenements

Bear in mind each room would house a family. You would have to go outside in a shed to go toilet. And there was no heating either.

I live in a really old house and it's a nightmare to heat in the winter

What should we do instead? Piss ourselves and demolish everything for commieblocks?

also im not saying that edinburgh is bad... and i only use the city as an example...

no something better than commieblocks but these old cities where slum like back in the day... will the people call commieblocks also very beautiful in 2400?

would be infinitely more beautiful without cars

All the problems with medieval cities have basically been fixed, that's why they are nice now. No more throwing your shit bucket out the window, roving gangs of murder hobos or literal livestock. If tower blocks had nice exteriors and 0 crime they would be ok, but most will probably be replaced over the years because conserving ugly buildings is hard.

Probably happening sooner than you think

probably yes you can find footage of boomers talking about how good slum housing was for community spirit how much safer it was etc most likely bullshit but nostalgia is a powerful emotion

>Piss ourselves and demolish everything for commieblocks?
Not everything but most of them would need to go, do you not like urban planning that values quality of life over historical bullshit?

> it was a living hell in the past.
Because back then you'd have 12 people crammed in a 3 room apartment with shoddy plumbing at best

Quality of life is dependent on historical bullshit, but you will never understand.

yes maybe im not so smart... edinburgh has a nice looking city... and a medieval city with modern tech can be very nice if it is pedestrian friendly... the city centres need to ban all cars

literally tore down huge amounts of historic slum housing to make way for council houses in the 70s

>it was a living hell in the past
why?

>Quality of life is dependent on historical bullshit
it literally doesn’t

look at this but now i agree with the brit poster that old cities are nice now with modern tech... being able to walk is much nicer than driving a car through a city..

I'd rather just say fuck off we're full like the Aussies to be honest. Not living in an ugly shithole is good for the soul, the reason for the lack of high-rises is less to do with preservation and more to do with legally recognized sight-lines anyway.
>I bought this house and it could see this shit and if I can't see this shit then the value of my property will go down
At some point some judge felt this was fair and swathes of the city now can't have anything particularly tall in them. Edinburgh is also

You do know its not like that anymore, right?

And you know it’s not because..?

I see, thanks

it isn't like that.
maybe 100 years ago.

Not all modern housing is a high-rise commieblocks. No need for building them unless population growths pressure the city.

The British user I linked to said he ‘lives’ in an old house, not ‘lived’.

where did he say he was british?

Our roads are so fucking shit though.

My old house is a pain to heat, but the other issues are not something I've ever had to deal with.

Also my old house is a single terrace house, not an old style high rise.

grim

His flag..??

british means English....

do the old cities in uk have a lot of car free and pedestrian friendly parts???

no it doesn't
be quiet

yes it does. it always has meant that, unless you go back to roman times.

no it hasn't
be quiet

Edinburgh is going to ban cars from large parts of its city.

yes. I just have Scottish documents from the 13th century calling them that....

more and more cities are making large bike and pedestrian only sections
i'm so happy

Yeah, but not in the parts were people actually live.

Pic Related is Buchanan Street in Glasgow, though Glasgow probably doesn't count as "old" city.

>Buchanan Street in Glasgow
I think it is old.
im sure it was built by a tobacco lord in the 1700s.

well those documents are incorrect

There are new developments, some in the centre even but they are ugly as fuck most of the time. Instead they build new stuff a bit further out (again like 20 mins away) and just retrofit most of the old housing stock. The only issue my family had was that we couldn't get double-glazing or anything similar because we had to keep the historical windows of our listed building. Otherwise it was basically modern

Also I can guarantee you that all the flats in and around Edinburgh are 1 person or couple per bedroom, except maybe for migrant slavs who are staying in bad conditions while working

Council doesn't want you to drive lad

Like the other guy said, although parts were already semi-pedestrian anyway. The shopping street parallel to the main street only allowed service vehicles

driving is bad.
