I disagree. I started reading at six years old and became an avid reader. And (perhaps as a consequence of this?) I have never once encountered a grammatical feature in my native language that I didn't already fully understand intuitively. So no, I've never had a reason to study the grammar of my native language.

I'm not saying language learners shouldn't study grammar, but I AM saying that enough comprehensible input will help your grammar as well. In the case of learning "correct" grammar you just need to consume material were "correct" grammar is used.

And without a doubt, I've learned much more English grammar from English language consuming media than I have ever done in any classroom.

After doing that for some time you should feel comfortable starting small conversations in French.

Yeah I don't think you need to learn grammar at all to acquire a language

However I do think studying grammar after reaching an advanced level can be useful, similarly to the way we are taught grammar in our own language at school to iron out any mistakes.

I remember a friend of mine at school used to always say "I won him" instead of "I beat him" when playing a game. That sort of small mistake is pretty common for native speakers who never correct their own grammar. You can also distinctly tell the difference between uneducated and well-educated people by the way they speak, so learning grammar is useful imo. e.g. stupid British people say "we was" instead of "we were"

Another problem with Low Saxon's long term survival is that many (most) of its speakers flat out refuse to adopt a unified spelling. There's even a Dutch Low Saxon and German Low Saxon Wikipedia all because they don't want to learn how to actually write their language in a way that makes it possible for speakers five villages away to still understand them. Some people got together and created the 'Nysassiske Skryfwyse', which looks like a pretty good attempt at unification to me, and still people refuse to move away from their illegible phonetic spellings based on the Dutch or German standard spellings respectively.
