I don't think Japan should join the EU. It is too far away from main European population centers. Any common EU policy would neglect Japans interest.

The EU is not a sovereign entity. It is basically a club of countries that have agreed to abide to some common rules. It is unrealistic to expect that this club would be able to stop one of its strongest members
