The reason torture doesn't work is a basic misunderstanding of how interrogation works.

In the real world you are almost never going to be after some single, easily checked bit of information. You will mostly be looking for information about people, places, dates and relationships.

This shit is hard to keep track of and remember. Under torture people are often under so much stress that they can't give you vital information, and will make up whatever stories they think will make you stop.

If you question them again, they will give you the half remembered details of whatever lie they told you last time.

In real interrogation you get people talking, let them talk, and then do it again, doing whatever you can to help them remember the important details. You want to control the environment. They can be tense and under stress, but you want them cold and feeling at least temporarily safe with you. If you interview them five times the truth is going to be close to the parts of their story that changes the least between telling. Hell, most people will give you the information you want just because you are the person that listens to them and brings them a cup of coffee.

It's boring but a cold room and a cup of coffee are much better then torture for interrogation.

Why the fuck would you do these things. It's shit ton of work, it's messy, why the fuck would you want to touch some guy's junk for a prolonged time too. Also most of these put the guy in life-threatening situation, you don't want him dying on you, nor you don't want to waste medical supplies on keeping him alive.

Keep it simple. Use sleep deprivation, don't feed the guy. Use cold or other elements. Everyone has a breaking point with these three. Hunger, cold, sleeping. You don't have to lift a finger and he will tell everything. If you really do need to deploy something or you are in a hurry, then either just beat the guy or waterboard him. If he is really hardcore, put a lightbulb in his mouth so he keep quiet and apply knife under his nails. Everyone can do these, it's very hard to fuck them up, you are not killing the man and they are proven to work.

I think it's good that race relations are being taken more seriously. I grew up racist but didn't realize it until later in life. My hometown didn't have any black people, so all I ever saw of them was in crime reports and I internalized that connection. I think realizing it has helped me be more objective and to see people as less of "us and them".
