There's just something intrinsically selfish, combined with an inability to think of others.

They've always been arrogant, god knows why. And by that I mean that there are recorded cases of undue and remarkable French arrogance even by the standards of medieval nobility reaching back all the way to the 14th century. Maybe it's cause their country held 50% of Europe's population for the better part of a millenium, making all the other areas thereof the periphery in relation to their own selves.
