Historically, it's more common to adapt a new local name. But this has changed in the US and Europe.

Kemal Atatürk and his administration of the country drastically changed its culture from the oligarchic Ottoman system, and introduced a westernized Republican style of government, even bringing in a Latin alphabet.
The Turks don't jive with the rest of the Islamic world for a reason. Egypt, Syria, Arabia, Libya, and Iraq are more rooted in the Arabic world. Iran is Shia, of course. That's why there's a triangle rivalry in between the Arabs, the Turks, and the Iranians, with a lot of little conflicts sprinkled in between, like with the Kurds. And the involved parties have shifted throughout time. Notice, all the wars with Israel, Turkey was absent. It was an Arab affair.
Also, under Kemalism, Panturkism was thrown out, in favor of nationalization, along with the destruction of a lot old Ottoman social hierarchies. This has its roots in the big distance Turkey has with Turkic peoples, because Turkey is a linguistic-cultural zone that slowly molded into an ethnicity.
And as far back as the failure at Vienna and the Franco-Ottoman alliance, the Turks have cozied up to westerners and acted more like another player rather than invaders. They also have a far looser history with Islam. They're not nearly as iconoclastic as the Arabs, and they had a (middling) standard of tolerance for Orthodoxy, though it was the Young Turks who committed the genocides. But I'm talking about centuries of developments.
But lately, there's been a return to more "backwards" traditionalism and Islamism, though not in the Arab/Iranian way, but millions of Turks have become emigrants and expatriates, particularly to Germany and France, and I'm guessing the US. They feel more connected to western culture, not just because of immigration, but because of a century of encroaching Republicanism.

You are pretty spot on except for this part. Immigrants in Europe are more backwards and "nationalistic" than most of the Turks in Turkey. They unironically vote for leftist parties in Europe then vote for Erdoğan here, literal parasites.
