Why didn't any of the great Indian empires ever manage to conquer the southern tip? As I recall the Guptas and Maurya Empires conquered most of India too and also missed the southern tip.

Somehow I doubt that. Buddhism and Iranian religions survived a 1000 years of hindus ruling either over them or being influential. Both were erased from literal Indian memory when after the muslim conquests. It took semi-amatuer European archeologists a century in the 1700-1800s to realize even the basic knowledge of what had been truly lost
