I wouldn't say that's true, people do care about the greater good it's just that the idea is constantly driven out of people's heads 24 hours a day with a creed of selfishness. And our wars now are mostly fought to protect the interests of our business community, not because invading Iraq actually made the American people safer off.

Our foreign policy is basically just wealthy interests in the US using the American people to fight wars that will enrich the wealthy while undercutting the prosperity and safety of the American people actually fighting the war.

Our businesses dominate the world in things like tech, pharma and media and that's without government funding like China. The industries that get bailed out are because they are required for business like usual (Boeing and banks) or in the case of the auto manufacturers we'd end up with one that has a complete monopoly (Ford didn't need bail out money but the other two did).

If that were true they wouldn't be heavily dependent on continuous government subsidy to avoid going bankrupt. They also wouldn't need a government bailout once a decade. For the most part corporations are deeply intertwined with the government, share parallel interests with the government, and are run by a lot of the same people who also take jobs in government agencies. Corporations can basically be said to be part of the state, just the state expanded.

Military isn't something we could do on our own so it's not comparable to medical care, retirement savings, delivery services, utilities, etc.
