I'm American in mainland China. You can apply for a scholarship here and they're fairly easy to get. You get a monthly stipend as well (I think it's 3000 RMB a month). Not a lot but I have a Russian and a Kazakh friend who live off of it here. It's an option if you want to just see somewhere new.
